今年59歲的加利奧文（Gary Oldman）憑在電影《黑暗對峙》（The Darkest Hour）中，飾演二戰時英國首相邱吉爾一角，勇奪戲劇類電影最佳男主角，這是他首次提名金球獎就獲得影帝殊榮。而戲劇類電影最佳女主角，就由法蘭西絲麥杜文（Frances McDormand）奪得，在電影《廣告牌殺人事件》（Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri）飾米德烈太太一角。而《廣告牌殺人事件》同時奪得戲劇組最佳電影、最佳劇本，在戲中飾演警員的森洛維（Sam Rockwell）則奪得最佳男配角，成為大贏家。
在電視組別方面，戲劇組最佳男主角就由《This Is Us》的Sterling K. Brown奪得，他是首位最得該獎的黑人演員。而最佳女主角就由《The Handmaid's Tale》的Elisabeth Moss奪得。至於迷你劇/電視電影的最佳女主角，就由妮歌潔曼（Nicole Kidman）在《小謊言》（Big Little Lies）中飾演Celeste一角，成功奪得該獎；最佳男主角就《Master of None》的Aziz Ansari奪得。
電影喜劇組男主角則由占士法蘭高（James Franco）憑《荷李活爛片王》奪得，上台領獎時更邀請戲中飾演爛片王的Tommy Wiseau上台，場面搞笑。而最佳動畫電影則由在香港剛剛上映不久的《Coco》奪得。
荷李活去年發生連串性醜聞事件，早前有影星發起「Time's Up」行動，呼籲出席金球獎人士穿黑衣以示支持。結果，金球獎頒獎禮上可謂一片黑海，幾乎全部女星都身穿黑衣出席頒獎禮，包括梅梅麗史翠普（Meryl Streep）、安祖蓮娜祖莉（Angelina Jolie）、妮歌潔曼（Nicole Kidman）、艾瑪史東（Emma Stone）等。
整晚司儀Seth Meyers和不少影星都提到性醜聞一事，Seth Meyers以「Ladies and remaining gentlemen.」劈頭就嘲諷事件。今年金球獎頒獎典禮，由NBC進行電視轉播。
